Abstract

Birth weight is not only a critical determinant of child survival, growth and development but also a valuable indicator of maternal health, nutrition and quality of life. Parity and maternal age have been shown to increase the risk of adverse neonatal outcomes. The various risk factors related with term low birth weight neonates been a subject of various studies in india. The present study was undertaken to understand the current situation of various maternal determinants which influence the birth weight of newborn in this part of country. Low birth weight has an adverse effect on perinatal life and beyond. Several maternal factors contribute to the birth weight. A community based cross sectional study on birth weight of new borns was conducted among pregnant women of Private and Government hospitals in Nalgonda, Telangana, India. Out of 120 pregnant women in the study group 32 primigravida and 88 multigravidas in the age group of 18-37 years. In the study, anaemia (Hb <10 g/dL) was associated with a significantly increased risk of low birth weight. Haemoglobin percentage (>13g/dL) also chances of low birth weight but not significant.
